100 BUSINESS WISDOM FROM THE GREATS THAT MAY CHANGE YOUR BUSINESS FOR GOOD – 32 of 100

I am writing a book on leadership at the moment and I have interviewed top business leaders in Entrepreneurship, Banking, Law, Accounting, Politics, Media etc to learn more about their unique insight on the topic of leadership. I have also researched into several outliers; those extra-ordinary over achievers in all walks of life. One common factor in their success is that they rely on other people’s talents and ability. They seem to know how to get the best out of those talents and this is a common factor among others that I identified as critical. Rockefeller untold riches is legendary to say the least and his take on leadership in this quote aligns with my findings that you need people but more importantly, you need to get superior output from them. In my executive coaching day job, I found that leaders I work with are sometimes looking for the magic bullet of management style but there is none! The founder of a technology company I helped transform his team was amazed at the turn-around in result within three months. I will give you a tip of how we did it and you can copy it.
We analysed the strengths and weaknesses of all managers using a psychometric test that is uncannily so accurate; even the managers were surprised about their results. We made list of all tasks critical to the success of the company and I called these ‘high impact roles’ We reallocated the roles based on the natural preferences of the managers. We organized them into teams to tackle key projects and gave them the autonomy to decide and organize themselves to get results. There was a complete transparency throughout the company so that those outside the team can see what others are doing and progress that they are making. This is a rather skeletal summary and there is more depth which we cannot discuss here because of time and space. The outcome is that those workers that used to work 70 -90 hours a week are working less than 35hours and getting superior output. Small change may make a big impact in your business and those who think they know it all rarely achieve extra-ordinary result in business or even in life. The role of the leader is to create an enabling environment, give people the jobs they are naturally disposed to do very well, put together the team that are purposeful and goal oriented, set them the target of what to achieve, give them the autonomy to carry out the ideas, measure result and correct errors constantly through a formal process, ensure that transparency throughout the company is non-negotiable. It is simple yet not easy to put all these elements together in the right proportion.
